In the area


Selkirk provides the nearest grocery shopping and hosts a museum and art gallery, Sir Walter Scott’s courtroom, and a number of restaurants and coffee shops.

Nearby there are also a number of traditional and craft producers including the Lochcarron Visitor Centre, for lovers of cashmere and tweed, and Lindean Mill Glass, where skilled glass artisans can be seen at work.

There are many independent shops to be found in Melrose, Peebles and Kelso, while Galashiels has larger supermarkets including Tesco, ASDA, Aldi and Marks & Spencer Food. Hawick is the traditional home of Scottish knitwear featuring many leading brands such as Pringle, Lyle & Scott etc.

Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, is a perfect day trip out. The journey is a very pretty drive of just over one hour or, now that the new Borders Railway is open, you can take the train for more relaxed travel direct into the city centre from either Tweedbank or Galashiels.

Eating Out

A number of local eating places cater for all needs. These include:

  • Minstrel Tearoom at Bowhill Country Estate (3 miles), where you can wlak in the grounds of the estate
  • Waterwheel cafe at nearby Philiphaugh (4 miles), which also provides a chance to see salmon leaping at the viewing centre
  • Selkirk Deli (town centre location), for lovely coffee and lunches
  • Taste of Spice in Selkirk (town centre location), for beautiful curries
  • The Woll Restaurant at Ashkirk (10 miles), has a good reputation for excellent food full of fresh local flavours


The Scottish Borders Region is home to numerous castles, towers, abbeys & stately homes. You can explore the rich history of the area, from the skirmishes of the Border Rivers, the remnants of fortified towers or the story of James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd who became one of Scotland’s literary giants.
