Welcome to The Shepherd’s Hut @ Lewinshope
The Shepherd’s Hut has been designed for adventurous nature lovers. Originally used as shelter for shepherds guarding flocks and nursing sick lambs on cold nights, we want it to be a quirky experience and a fun place to stay.
The Shepherd’s hut is situated at The Mill pond and can be booked together with The Mill or on its own, all year long. It’s not too far away from all that is going on in The Mill, thus ideal for the children and teenagers. But it is also a romantic gateway for a couple…
If you would like to book The Shepherd’s Hut, please have a look at the availability and prices, and then contact Johnny or Lulu Watson with your booking details, questions or requests. Please note that if The Mill is booked without The Shepherd’s Hut, the hut is not available for booking, for privacy matters.
The project has just reached completion and we are starting the booking now. All the pictures aren’t up-to-date, but please have a look on our blog to see the different stages.
A selection of photos displaying the warm and homely interior of The Shepherd’s Hut:
A cosy haven
The Shepherd’s Hut is handmade and built to an incredible high finish, using locally sourced materials. The interior has been filled with Oak, Sycamore, Douglas fir and Elm and fabrics from Orwell and Goode with beautifully made blinds and cushions. A stunning Sycamore table has been made in a folding half moon table, seats and drawers.
Beautifully restored, The Shepherd’s Hut has all the basics you need:
- A hobbit wood burner to nestle around and keep the Hut toasty warm!
- A ring gas cooker, with utensils and a frying pan
- No running water but access to the The Mill’s warm boot room (underfloor heating) with large thunderbox loo and sink, drying rack provided and The Watsons happy for you to use washing machine in the farmhouse
Please note that the two beds are only 172cm long (standard beds are 190cm). The top bunk is 62 cm wide, the bottom 85.5wide. We would say a child of 10 years to sleep on the top bunk and the adult below. Smoking is not permitted in the property.

There is ample private parking in front of The Mill.
The Mill pond and surroundings
The Shepherd’s Hut is directly surrounded by a field at The Mill pond. Near by are two swings hang from the oak tree with wonderful views looking across the valley and you can have a bonfire for toasting marshmallows on the fire pit. There is also a table and oak bench to relax outside and eat. The wood is a wonderful canopy of trees and there are plenty of owls and bats and wildlife to be seen. Maps are available on request.
Guests are welcome to walk around the wider estate which extends to over a hundred acres. You can roam around the fields and woods, remembering to close gates.
The Mill pond can get boggy in certain conditions so, for the safety of young children, please ensure they are accompanied by a responsible person in this area.
For sporty types, an astro turf tennis court is available. There is no need to book, it’s available anytime through the day (but please note that there are no floodlights). There is a seating area to watch the sport or just look across to the hills and take in the spectacular views up and down the Yarrow Valley. Rackets & Balls can be provided.
If you are also renting The Mill, two well-behaved dogs are welcome (additional fee applies of £30 per dog). Owners are required to keep dogs in the boot room when wet, equipped with an adjustable underfloor heating. We do allow well behaved dogs into The Mill but not on the sofas and chairs or beyond in the bedrooms.
In case you are only staying in The Shepherd’s Hut, just one small well-behaved dog is welcome (additional fee applies of £15), given the size of the hut.
The Shepherd’s Hut is not overlooked and offers a high level of privacy. The Mill and the main farmhouse are nearby but sit quite separate. We are on hand to help with any requests or questions.

"We spent a lovely week at the mill with all my husbands family. The quality of the renovation and workmanship is impressive. Lovely, lovely house and a great holiday in the Borders. Thank you!"
"We have just enjoyed the most wonderful stay at The Mill. Nestled in the stunning countryside of the Scottish Borders, it is quiet and secluded, and was perfect for us to relax and catch up with family. The accommodation is of a very high standard and very comfortable with lots of attention to detail, and beautiful wooden finishes throughout. The owners have thought of everything. We have very happy memories of our stay. Thank you very much."
"We had a fantastic stay at the Mill. A very warm welcome from Lulu and family and a truly stunning home. We took so many pictures of the beautiful woodwork to inspire our budding joiner son back home! With St Marys Loch nearby we took our own kayak and had a great day – we also enjoyed a lovely lunch at the local salmon viewing center who also had lovely and welcoming staff!"
The Mill was perfect. Each bedroom/ensuite combo was unique and beautiful. The woodwork and furniture throughout the house is outstanding and lovely. There are so many unique features to this well-designed home. My entire family was thrilled with this property, and we were all sad when we had to leave.
